"Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites" came out on 22 October 2010, first on Beatport, on the EP of the same name released by deadmau5's label mau5trap with Big Beat. Skrillex (Sonny Moore) made the EP on a laptop, and the track started as a test of Native Instruments' FM8 synthesizer. The name comes from David Bowie's 1980 album Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps).

The "Yes, oh my gosh!" just before the drop is Rachael Nedrow, a sport stacking champion, cheering in one of her YouTube videos after she broke her own record. She didn't know Skrillex had used it, and later received royalties.

On 12 February 2012 it won the Grammy for Best Dance Recording, and the EP won Best Dance/Electronica Album. It reached number 69 on the Billboard Hot 100, is certified double platinum in the US, and plays in the film Spring Breakers.
