There is no best DJ app, only the one that fits the gear you will play on, where your music comes from and what you want to pay. Short version: rekordbox for club CDJs, Serato if your controller unlocks it, Traktor to pay once, VirtualDJ for the cheapest working setup, djay Pro for Mac, iPad and streaming, Engine DJ for Denon DJ or Numark standalone gear, and Mixxx for free and open source.

Prices checked October 2026. Monthly prices are for monthly billing; yearly billing is cheaper on rekordbox and djay Pro. Beatsource is merging into Beatport during 2026, so it is left out of the streaming column.

Stems means the app splits a track live into vocals, drums, bass and melody. Streaming means the app plays tracks straight from a subscription service, with your own paid account and an internet connection.

rekordbox

For: anyone who will play on Pioneer DJ and AlphaTheta CDJs or XDJs, which means most club booths. You prepare at home in rekordbox, export to a USB stick, and the players read your cues, loops and playlists. The Free plan runs with Hardware Unlock gear (most current AlphaTheta controllers) and already includes stems, plus DVS (digital vinyl system: timecode records that control the software) on the Hardware Unlock devices that list it. Video plays on every plan, but Free and Core show a caution message on the external screen. Core ($12 a month) works with any supported DJ gear; Creative ($18) and Professional ($36) add video performance, more creative tools and cloud sync across more devices, with a Cloud Option add-on for Dropbox space. More on video in free video DJ software. It streams Apple Music, Beatport, SoundCloud, Spotify and TIDAL.

The catch: the plans are confusing, and without eligible hardware the Free plan is a library tool, not a performance app. Spotify tracks cannot be exported to a USB for the club.

Serato DJ Pro

For: scratch, hip hop and open format DJs, and anyone whose controller is Serato-enabled. Serato supports more than 100 pieces of hardware, and many controllers unlock Serato DJ Pro with no license at all: you plug in and play (Serato's hardware page marks the ones that need a paid upgrade instead). Version 4 (4.0.10 today, 5.0 in beta) rebuilt the library around crates. Stems is included, and Apple Music, Beatport, SoundCloud, Spotify and TIDAL stream inside the app. If your hardware does not unlock it: $11.99 a month or $299 once. Serato DJ Suite ($14.99 a month or $499 once) adds DVS, Video, Flip, Pitch 'n Time and Serato Studio.

The catch: Mac and Windows only, no mobile version, and a Lite controller still needs a paid license to run Pro. Serato DJ Lite itself is free.

Traktor Pro 4

For: DJs who want to pay once and own the software, fans of four decks and deep effects, and owners of the Native Instruments Traktor MX2 controller, which comes with the full version. $149 buys Traktor Pro 4 (4.5.1 today) with stem separation built in. Traktor Play is a $49 cut-down version, and you pay the difference to upgrade later. The Pro Plus subscription was dropped, so there is no subscription at all now.

The catch: streaming is Beatport only. No TIDAL, SoundCloud, Spotify or Apple Music, and no free tier. Bringing a rekordbox library in with cues intact needs a third-party tool.

VirtualDJ

For: mobile and wedding DJs, karaoke and video DJs, and anyone on a tight budget. VirtualDJ is free at home as long as you do not plug in professional gear. Home ($4 a month) adds entry-level controllers but keeps the audio branding and bans paid gigs, Pro ($19 a month) unlocks everything including stems, and Business ($99 a month) adds support and multi-user licenses. A one-off Pro Infinity license is still sold but misses some newer AI features. VirtualDJ 2026 streams Beatport, Deezer, SoundCloud, TIDAL, Spotify (added in September 2026) and the iDJPool catalog, and it maps to almost any controller ever made.

The catch: the interface is busy, the brand carries less weight in club booths, and it is Mac and Windows only (the iOS and Android apps are remotes).

djay Pro

For: Mac, iPhone and iPad DJs, beginners, and anyone who mixes mostly from streaming. djay Pro is free to start; PRO costs $6.99 (€6.99) a month or $49.99 (€49.99) a year. It runs on Mac, Windows, iOS, iPadOS, Android and visionOS, streams Spotify, Apple Music, TIDAL (with the DJ Extension), SoundCloud Go+ and Beatport, and its Neural Mix splits tracks into stems in real time. OneLibrary, built with AlphaTheta, writes a USB drive that rekordbox and the CDJ-3000X, XDJ-AZ, OPUS-QUAD and OMNIS-DUO can read, cues and loops included.

The catch: Neural Mix does not work on Spotify or Apple Music tracks, recording is off for streamed tracks, and few clubs have a djay setup waiting for you.

Engine DJ

For: owners of Denon DJ Prime and SC Live, Numark Mixstream and Rane standalone players, which run Engine OS without a laptop. Engine DJ Desktop (5.1.0) is free on Mac and Windows and reads your rekordbox, Serato, Traktor and Apple Music libraries directly; Sync Manager then exports to a USB drive, with stems pre-rendered on the computer. On the hardware you can stream Amazon Music Unlimited, Apple Music, Beatport, SoundCloud and TIDAL, or pull tracks from Dropbox.

The catch: Desktop is a prep tool, so without the hardware it has little to offer. Apple Music streams on newer units only and not in the desktop app, and since June 2026 the hardware shows Beatport in place of Beatsource.

Mixxx

For: DJs on Linux, students, tinkerers and anyone who refuses subscriptions. Mixxx 2.5.6 is free, open source (GPL) and runs on Windows, Mac and Linux. It reads your iTunes, Traktor, rekordbox and Serato libraries, supports DVS with timecode vinyl, maps many controllers out of the box plus any MIDI or HID device by script, and exports playlists as M3U, PLS or CSV.

The catch: no streaming service at all, and no live stem separation; the 2.6 beta can play stem files you made with other tools.

How to choose

  1. Match the gear you will play on. Gigs on CDJs and XDJs: prepare in rekordbox, or in djay Pro with a OneLibrary USB. A venue on Denon DJ players: use Engine DJ Desktop. Your own controller: check what it unlocks. Serato-enabled hardware means free Serato, Hardware Unlock gear means free rekordbox, and the Traktor MX2 comes with Traktor Pro 4.
  2. Match your music source. Bought files play in all seven. Beatport streams in all but Mixxx. Spotify and Apple Music work in rekordbox, Serato and djay Pro (Spotify also in VirtualDJ, Apple Music also on Engine OS hardware) but not in Traktor, and Spotify tracks cannot go onto a USB for the club. Streaming inside a DJ app is for personal use under most service terms; the rules for playing in public differ by country, so ask your local collecting society.
  3. Try the free tier first. Every app except Traktor has one. Load the same ten tracks in two apps and play a 20-minute mix in each before you pay.
  4. Think about moving later. Playlists travel as a plain M3U file or by drag and drop; cues and beatgrids often do not. Engine DJ, Mixxx and djay read other libraries directly; Serato and Traktor need third-party tools for rekordbox cues.

Whatever you pick, your Digger Digger crate goes with you: press + on the tracks you want, then Send to my DJ app exports the list for any of these seven apps. How it works shows the steps.
