Afro house lives on groove more than on drops. The best sets feel like one long story: rolling percussion, warm vocals and a few big moments the whole room remembers.
Start warm
Open around 118 to 120 BPM with organic, percussive tracks and keep the big vocals for later. The first twenty minutes are about earning the trust of the room, not impressing it.
Build with percussion, not volume
Choose tracks with strong drums, shakers and congas, and mix long: 32 to 64 bars lets two grooves melt into one instead of fighting. Raise the tempo a little at a time.
Mix in key
Your DJ software already shows the key of every track. Moving one step around the Camelot wheel (8A to 9A) or switching to the relative key (8A to 8B) keeps vocals and pads from clashing.
Place your anthems
Two or three peak moments an hour is plenty. Drop a big vocal after a long instrumental stretch and it hits twice as hard.
Keep one ID up your sleeve
A track nobody has yet makes the set yours. Our Famous IDs show which unreleased tracks the big DJs are teasing right now.
